Chilean Wedding Customs

Usually, in Chile, weddings go like this:

The man proposes and (so long as the lady accepts), he offers her an engagement ring which she places on her ring finger, just like in England and most of Europe.

Then they usually do alternate wedding ceremony rings and wear them on their proper ‘ring’ fingers.

Then, each time they set the marriage date, they have the Civil Service, which is the authorized aspect of things. This normally includes going to a Registry Office and having the authorized whys and wherefores read out in entrance of a few of your closest family and friends. That is when the couples transfer their wedding ceremony ring to the left ring finger in the event that they want. Plenty of Chileans put on their rings on their right ‘ring’ fingers too – it doesn’t matter to them. This service is then followed by an enormous dinner and a small occasion for aforementioned shut household and mates and a few presents are given.

The wedding takes place after some time (say, a month at the very least) after this authorized occasion. The wedding is a non secular ceremony. And a ceremony it definitely is.

You invite hundreds of individuals – from the furthest of your loved ones members and associates and their relations and pals, and your boss and their household and pals together – and squeeze them into the hugest and grandest church you will discover and afford. Then the wedding happens. The vows, the readings, the blessings from the priest and all other follows. Then they’ve a giant outdated band (yes, on the church ‘stage’) and a tremendous singer after which the bride and groom leave together to plenty of clapping and outside have a bit of rice throwing and images flashes, as is the norm in western cultures.

They’re then whisked away, followed by their guests, to a lavish celebration. Typically there are several hundred tables full with elaborate centerpieces with candles of their crystalline candle holders in every single place and flowers all around, twisted and twined by way of the chairs. Champagne is liberally handed out by tuxedo waiters as is caviar and pisco sours and different culinary and taste buddy delights, earlier than sitting right down to a full-service dinner. Throughout the reception, the groom, bride, and their dad and mom will cease by every table to say thank to their guests. The visitor in return, will give envelopes containing wedding ceremony cards and cash gifts (Chilean spurs was the standard wedding gifts within the olden days) to the newly wedded couples along with their blessing. Dinner is followed by an enormous Latino disco and a dancing party, which is opened by the groom and the bride’s first dance and the place everyone wears masks and has streamers and joke store child’s get together things. The social gathering does not recess until very late at night. The newly wedded couples then depart for his or her honeymoon.

Impact Of Punjabi Culture On Bollywood

Inevidently, a big number of dance tunes in the newest Bollywood movies that are instantly foot tapping have Punjabi beats and lyrics, which give them a distinctive flavour from other kinds of Bollywood music. These Punjabi fun songs are normally big hits and can be heard playing in the discotheques and pubs all over India for several months past and before the release of the movie.

A Lot of the latest Bollywood movies like Singh is King, Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal were based on a Punjabi theme and they turned out to be large hits. A big Punjabi joint family has become a very well known backdrop among the directors for storylines of Hindi films in the last few of years.

The Punjabi setting and funk is so popular that several times the director does not even feel the need of having a Punjabi character in the film. Just a couple of Punjabi songs that have Bhangra music lend the film good support and popularity. And in fact, most of this music becomes very popular.

The Punjabi background and cultural setting has also been used in foreign cinema such as in movies like Bend it Like Beckham and Monsoon Wedding. The Punjabi backdrop finds popularity with all types of audience and the loudness of the culture gives an engaging and melodramatic character to the movie.

The excitement of the culture draws interest of movie watchers from all parts of the country. Actually, this fervour is not limited to India alone – the Bhangra based songs are well known amongst people from all across the globe. No matter which part of the world you stay or are from, when the Bhangra beats play, you are bound to stand up and dance your heart out.

So, it comes as no revelation that the latest Bollywood movies are also cashing in on this worldwide phenomenon. After all, it’s making good money for the new Hindi movies’ producers.

How I Became A Professional Baseball Heckler

I once was a hapless baseball heckler. But I had no idea exactly how bad I was until the summer of 1996. It was then, while taking in a Jays game with a few friends, we pitched a particularly bad line towards the Twins bullpen. Looking down on Greg Hansell, the line was “Hey Hansell, where’s Grettel?”. Twins catcher Matt Walbeck turned around and said, ‘You’re the worst hecklers I’ve ever heard in my life,’. It was then I realized the need to improve my powers of harassment.

I went to bookstores, the library, and anywhere else I could think of. Remember, this was 1996, and I didn’t have an internet connection… yet. As soon as I did, I posted the simple question in a few newsgroups – “What is the funniest thing you’ve heard yelled at a ballgame?” Soon there were dozens of suggestions, then it was hundreds. Now I’ve collected about 2500 of the best. Some the zingers?

How about…

* How’s your Japanese?
* I’ve seen better arms on a snake!
* You couldn’t save anything at WalMart!
* You’ve got less hits than an Amish website!
* Take off your coat, you’re inside!
* You couldn’t throw a party!
* You couldn’t pitch a tent!
* I thought only horses slept standing up!
* How can you eat with those hands?
* I’m gonna break your cane and shoot your dog!
* You’ve had fewer hits than Vanilla Ice!
* Hey, Dracula, wake up your bat!
* Do you want my autograph?
* Come on Cinderella, get to the ball!

Or a bit edgier (But still family friendly)…

* You couldn’t throw rice at a Chinese wedding!
* There is more heat in an Amish home!
* I’ve seen better hit and runs in the ghetto!
* You’re about as washed up as the Gulf Coast!

And some very original ones…

* This infields got more holes in it than OJ’s alibi!
* I’ve got internet stocks in better shape than you!
* I’ve seen better sliders at White Castle!
* There’s more holes in his glove than a Florida presidential ballot!
* I’ve gotten better calls from my ex-wife!
* Nice uniform, where’s the Star Trek convention?
* This must be the Top 40 Countdown, the hits just keep on rolling!
* I’ve seen a better move by U-Haul!
* This pitcher is pac-man…walka, walka, walka, walka!
* You couldn’t save a Word file!!
* I haven’t seen a slide like that since Enron!
* The graphics on your personal website suck!
* Did you buy that swing from GNC?
* Did you make the call on WMD in Iraq as well?

Anything personal, racial, or obscene has no place at the ballpark. Neither does physical contact like pouring beer on people or throwing coins – both way over the line. You stay safely away from the line with lines that are topical, witty, and original. For example in Dodger Stadium shortly after the brawl in stands a few years ago, which was started when someone snatched the cap of Chad Krueter’s head — a fan behind the Dodger dugout yelled at Chad : “Hey Kreuter, I just bought your cap on eBay!” Which was a fantastic line meeting those 3 criteria.

Banias And Their Marriage Rituals

People spend their whole lives looking for a perfect match. The procedure of finding a suitable bride or groom is almost same in every culture with the categorization of it being a love or an arranged marriage. Marriages are made in heaven, but are given a final nod by our parents. In almost all Indian families parents are the final decision makers for choosing the life partner for their children.

Though, the cultures and traditions of all the marriages resolve the purpose of celebrating the marriage with great pop and gaiety and to bless the couple for their successful married life. The marriage ceremonies and rituals vary according to the traditions and cultural background of a particular community. There are few communities in the country which are present all over the world and are defined according to their business and work culture. One of such communities is Banias, they are the people involved in the business like banking, money- lending, or the people dealing with the selling of products like, grains, groceries, spices and oil. Banias can be the people with sir names like Aggarwal, Agarwal, Baniya, Bani, Agarwal Marwari, Banikar, Oswal, Marwari, Mahajan, etc.

These people are popularly known as the thrifty or the penny- pinching community, but their marriages are celebrated at a very large scale with lavishing food and arrangements. Most of the Jains and Hindus constitute the Bania community. The people who follow Hindu religion are called Meshris, where others following Jain culture are called Shravaks. The Banias marriage date are supposed to be fixed by the parents during the time period of Kartika Sud i.e. 11th of October- November to Asarba Sud, i.e. 11th of June- July.

The marriage ceremony in a Bania family starts with the worship of Ganpati ji in both the houses of the bride and the groom, which is performed few days before the actual day of marriage. The ganpati pooja is organized to seek blessing from the god and the ceremony is called Mandav. The decoration of the marriage Mandav is done after the prayers. Then the ladies of the house go to a potters place, signing and dancing, as a procession, there they sprinkle sandalwood powder and flowers on the potters wheel, after which they bring earthen pots back home to be, used in the marriage ceremonies.

A day before the marriage both the Bania families, carry gifts and wedding dress for bride and groom to each others house respectively. The bride and the groom do not participate in these rituals. The wedding dress of the bania bride and the groom is usually a lehnga- choli or saree and a sherwani or kurta pyjami respectively.

On the day of the wedding, both the houses are decorated with all lights and flowers, all the family members, friends and distant relatives are invited to attend the wedding ceremony. To begin with the marriage day ceremonies, balls of cow dung ashes are thrown in all the four directions, meanwhile the brides mother takes seven circular rounds around the groom holding curd in two earthen pots, which afterwards are crushed by the right foot of the groom allowing him to enter the Brides house or the place of marriage.
Then the mother of the Bania bride washes the feet of the groom with honey, curd, sugar, milk and ghee to add the purifying factor. After this, the actual marriage ceremonies take place of Kanyadan (a ritual where the parents gives away the responsibility of their daughter to the groom for the lifetime), phere (seven circles around the sacred fire to promise each others support in all walks of life), after which the groom applies sindur or read powder on the forehead of the groom and then makes her wear a mangalsutra, marking the proof of a married women. All this leads to the completion of the Bania marriage ceremonies, which are more or less like a Hindu marriage.

Then the Bidayi ceremony takes place, a part of which the Bania bride moves away to the grooms house to lead a happy married life. The carriage or the car carrying the bride towards her new house is made to crush a coconut to mark a pure and happy beginning of their married life.
